Definition
The KFN format is a format designed for karaoke. It is a specialized file format used by the KaraFun Player software to play karaoke tracks. It has a proprietary structure recognized exclusively by KaraFun Player.
Simply put, a KFN file can contain
- one or more audio files (mp3, ogg, etc.)
- multimedia files (images, video),
- Fonts that are more fun than Times New Roman,
- A text file (called Song.ini) containing the lyrics (split into syllables) with their timing syncs, and lists of effects (fades, image appearances, text movement, etc.)
The advantage of a KFN file is that it integrates high-quality audio (mp3, ogg), synchronized lyrics, and effects into a single file, while remaining nearly the same size as the audio file itself.
Furthermore, when you include an audio file and a second one identical to the first but purely instrumental (with the vocals removed), you can switch between the two and offer an experience with or without vocals (called a vocal guide), which is even more engaging in a karaoke setting.
Playing and creating a KFN file
The KaraFun Group, the company behind this format, has decided to no longer offer a local player or editor for PCs and to move everything online via streaming, featuring a large catalog and adding powerful features such as the automated creation of instrumental tracks. The old “Karafun” (player) and “Karafun Editor” software are no longer available for download.
Third-party software has emerged, allowing users to continue playing and creating local KFN files. Examples include Kanto Karaoke and… now Karaboss
