Create a karaoke mp3 from a karaoke MIDI

We saw in another chapter that you can convert a MIDI file into an mp3.
We also saw that you could turn an mp3 into a line-by-line karaoke mp3 with just the lyrics.

So we can legitimately wonder if, from a MIDI karaoke file, we couldn’t have a karaoke mp3 with syllables… In fact, with a MIDI file, you have much more than just the lyrics line by line, you have the time-stamped syllables.

It consists of four steps:

 1. Convert the MIDI file into an mp3
 2. Export the lyrics from the MIDI file into a text file in LRC format from the MIDI player.
 3. Load the LRC file into the mp3
 4. Save the mp3 with the lyrics

1 Converting a MIDI file into an mp3

That’s all there is to it.
So now we have a MIDI file containing lyrics and an mp3 file.

2 Exporting lyrics from a MIDI file to LRC

Open the MIDI file (« Adele – Hello.kar » in our example), and click on the « Edit lyrics » button.

Click on the ‘File’ menu > ‘Export lyrics to .lrc format’

Choose to export to syllables (we want real karaoke by the syllable)

The program suggests you save the file with the .lrc extension (example « Adele – Hello.lrc »)

The contents of the file should look like this extract:

[Tool:Karaboss https://karaboss.lacharme. net]
[Ti:Hello]
[Ar:Adele]

[00:05.89]Hello <00:08.54>it's <00:08.92>me
[00:11.39]I <00:11.77>was <00:11.96>wondering <00:13. 29>if <00:13.48>after <00:14.24>all <00:14.81>these <00:15.00>years <00:15.57>you'd <00:15.76>like <00:16. 33>to <00:16.52>meet
[00:17.47]To <00:17.66>go <00:18.04>over <00:20.51>ev'rything
[00:23.16]They <00:23.54>say <00:23.92>that <00:24.11>time's <00:24.68>supposed <00:25.44>to <00:25.63>heal <00:26.20>ya
[00:26. 77]But <00:26.96>I <00:27.15>ain't <00:27.34>done <00:27.91>much <00:28.48>healing
[00:30.19]Hello <00:32.66>can <00:33.04>you <00:33.23>hear <00:33.80>mea

So we now have

 • A MIDI file
 • An mp3 file
 • A LRC file

3 Load the LRC file into the mp3

Select the mp3 file in the explorer and click on the « Modify » button (or double-click and stop playback)

You might think that’s it, because the presence of an LRC file with the same name as the mp3 file means that the lyrics are displayed and synchronised with the music.

But let’s go a step further. Click on the « Edit » menu > « Edit lyrics »
The content of the LRC file is automatically loaded into the editor because it is in the same folder as the mp3 file.
If the LRC file was in a different folder, you would have to click on ‘Import’ > ‘Import a .LRC file’.

4 Save the mp3 with the lyrics

Simply click on the « Record the lyrics in the mp3 file » button: the program will offer to save the mp3 file with the lyrics under a different name (it is not possible to overwrite the original mp3 file).

You now have a karaoke mp3 file that can be played on any mp3 player capable of displaying lyrics.
